Life on the Water: The Canal, Weeks Bay, and the Jubilee

The house sits on a quiet tidal canal that runs toward Weeks Bay, and that little detail shapes the whole stay. Mornings are for coffee and bird-watching; afternoons are for the water.

There’s a public boat launch about three minutes away, which puts Mobile Bay, the Fish River, and a run toward Gulf Shores all within reach. Guests who fish tend to find their spot fast and come back with stories — the water here is brackish and full of life. Then there’s the jubilee — one of the Bay’s genuine natural wonders. On certain still, humid summer nights, low oxygen near the shore sends flounder, crab, and shrimp into the shallows all at once, and the locals wade out with buckets.
